Bariatric Surgery for Hypertension

With bariatric surgery, patients can see an 88% improvement in hypertension and 70% of cases are cured.

The most important issue to remember is that obesity is associated with hypertension, and hypertension is associated with many other diseases that can affect overall health and life expectancy. With weight-loss, a significant fall in blood pressure may permit a decrease in the number or amount of medications taken.

A new study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center shows that certain severely obese patients may experience significant, long-term blood pressure improvements as they lose substantial amounts of weight after gastric bypass surgery, thereby contributing to their overall health. The study also shows that one-third of patients under active drug treatment for blood pressure prior to their surgery were able to eliminate or reduce their blood pressure medications after surgery.
